Birthstone in October---Opal

Opal is the birthstone for the month of October.   It is known for its beautiful play of colors caused by the diffraction of white light through microscopic silica spheres within the gemstone.

Opals are found in many different colors, ranging from white and gray to red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and even black.   The play of color within opals is caused by the way light refracts and diffracts within the stone.   Opals with red, orange, and yellow colors are typically more valuable than those with blue and green shades.
